Photographer Richard Avedon dead at 81
Richard Avedon, the revolutionary photographer who redefined fashion photography as an art form while achieving critical acclaim through his stark black-and-white portraits of the powerful and celebrated, died Friday. He was 81.
Avedon suffered a brain hemorrhage last month while on assignment in San Antonio, Texas, for The New Yorker, taking pictures for a piece called "On Democracy." He spent months on the project, shooting politicians, delegates and citizens from around the country.
He died at Methodist Hospital, said Perri Dorset, a spokeswoman for the magazine.
Avedon's influence on photography was immense, and his sensuous fashion work helped create the era of supermodels like Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford. But Avedon went in another direction with his portrait work, shooting unsparing and often unflattering shots of subjects from Marilyn Monroe to Michael Moore.
"The results can be pitiless," Time magazine critic Richard Lacayo once noted of the black-and-white portraits. "With every wrinkle and sag set out in high relief, even the mightiest plutocrat seems just one more dwindling mortal."
As a Publishers Weekly review once noted, Avedon helped create the cachet of celebrity -- if he took someone's picture, they must be famous. His fun-loving, fantasy-inspiring approach helped turn the fashion industry into a multibillion-dollar business.

Chris Martin geeft mishandeling fotograaf toe
Coldplay singer Chris Martin has been cautioned after admitting he attacked photographer Alessandro Copetti in April this year.
Copetti claimed that Martin had floored him with a kick to the back as he took a picture of wife Gwyneth Paltrow leaving San Lorenzo restaurant in London's Knightsbridge.
Martin had previously claimed that the photographer had tripped chasing their taxi as they left he scene, but after a five-month police investigation, he has admitted the assault.
Copetti, who injured his knee and broke his camera flash during the incident said: "At least he's accepted responsibility. The police said he apologised to them and was very helpful. But he has never apologised to me. He seems to think it is okay to be violent to photographers because he is a celebrity."

Slowaakse ex-premier bedreigt persfotografe
De voormalige Slowaakse premier Vladimir Meciar heeft donderdag een persfotografe bedreigd die van hem een foto wilde nemen in een ziekenhuis.
Meciar onderging in een particuliere kliniek in Kosice medische tests. Fotografe Iveta Komendova van het dagblad Novy Cas fotografeerde hem toen hij van de trap naar zijn kamer liep. Volgens het persbureau TASR greep hij de camerariem van Komendova en dreigde hij het toestel kapot te maken als zij het rolletje niet afgaf.
Het Tsjechische persbureau CTK meldde later van ziekenhuisdirecteur Juraj Vancik te hebben vernomen dat Meciar ademhalingsproblemen en rugklachten had. Komendova deed bij de politie aangifte van het incident en diende meteen een aanklacht in tegen Meciar.

Herseninfarct treft Richard Avedon
Portrait photographer Richard Avedon has suffered a brain hemorrhage while on assignment for the New Yorker magazine in Texas and has been hospitalized, a spokeswoman for the magazine said Wednesday. Avedon, 81, suffered the stroke Saturday while shooting an essay on democracy that was set to run shortly before the November U.S. presidential election.
One of the most celebrated U.S. fashion and portrait photographers, Avedon was the first staff photographer ever hired for The New Yorker, a magazine that until editor Tina Brown took over in the 1990s traditionally did not run photographs.
Avedon's photos, usually intimate, intense studies against a white backdrop, are often powerful statements of a person's persona. Among his most famous photos are portraits of Andy Warhol, Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, the Duchess of Windsor and Truman Capote.

Life is back!
The photographic journal Life returns to US news-stands Friday with its backers hoping to restore its former glory. The photo journal disappeared from news-stands in 1972 and a short-lived revival in 2000 failed to match its heyday circulation which spanned from the 1930s to the 1960s.
However, a fresh bid to revive Life will see it hit news-stands as a supplement with over 70 newspapers around the U.S. Initial circulation is pegged at 12 million in its classic format, with the same red and white Life logo. Screen godess Monroe will not grace the cover on Friday, but the actress Sarah Jessica Parker, star of the popular television series "Sex and the City."
Informative and entertaining, humourous and serious, the original Life magazine employed some of the world's most renowned photographers whose pictures marked an era. Robert Capa snapped the Allied D-Day landings on the beaches at Normandy. Life's 1930s photos of immigrants are reputed to have inspired John Steinbeck's novel "The Grapes of Wrath".

De supportersvereniging van FC Utrecht heeft op haar website een foto geplaatst van een ME'er die volgens hen verantwoordelijk is voor geweld tegen Utrecht-fans in 2002 bij de ArenA.
Degene die zijn identiteit onthult, krijgt als beloning een seizoenskaart van een club naar keuze. De supportersvereniging wil de ME'er laten vervolgen.

Olympus has unveiled a new digital SLR camera for non-professional users, becoming the latest company to join the heated competition for a share of a fast-growing market.
Olympus, the world's third-best selling digital camera brand, said on Tuesday it would aim for a 15 percent share of the market by 2006 with the E-300, which will go on sale in Japan in November and worldwide under the same name by the end of this year.
With the market for smaller digital cameras slowing, camera makers have been turning in their search for profits to the digital SLR market for non-professional users, which is currently dominated by Nikon and Canon.

Fotograferen verboden bij politie-actie
Bij een grote politie-actie, zondagavond in Utrecht, was "op last van de rechter-commissaris" een verbod ingesteld om ter plaatse te filmen of te fotograferen. Wie dat toch deed zou worden verwijderd of aangehouden, aldus agenten.
Een arrestatieteam van de politie hield bij de actie drie mensen aan. Volgens ooggetuigen was er sprake van een grootscheepse inval in een bovenwoning, die rond 19.00 uur begon. Een peloton van de mobiele eenheid was aanwezig.

Terry O'Neill, one of the world's most published photographers, has condemned the rapid spread of digital cameras for wrecking the art of taking pictures.
He believes digital cameras are only fit for "amateurs and paparazzi", and that the technology is turning all pictures into "snapshots". O'Neill, who rose to prominence with Vogue and Paris Match in the 1960s, is one of many leading photographers resisting the change.
They say the quality of the new images remains inferior and traditional negatives are a more reliable record of the past than electronic archives. Millions of photographs have already been lost because most digital camera owners never print their pictures out.
"You will always get better quality with film. You can talk to any darkroom expert about that," O'Neill said. "I don't use digital, and I'll always use film. Digital is for amateurs and paparazzi photographers. There is a great skill in photography. Digital cameras reduce everything to a snapshot."
Lord Snowdon is another prominent fan of old-fashioned cameras, as are the award-winning news photographers Tom Stoddart and Don McCullin.

National Geographic maakt excuses
De hoofdredacteur van National Geographic Magazine heeft zijn excuses aangeboden voor een reportage in het juli-nummer van het tijdschrift. In een reportage over het Barabaig-volk in Tanzania bleken meerdere foto's van de hand van Gilles Nicolet in scène gezet, en voorzien van misleidende teksten.
Zo werd een foto van krijgers met slagtanden niet gemaakt "kort na het vinden van een overleden olifant in de jungle", maar met slagtanden die door de fotograaf werden aangeleverd. Andere foto's van een krijger die zijn speer uit een olifant trekt en diens slagtanden verwijdert bleken van een ander volk dan de Barabaig, en bovendien al jaren eerder gemaakt dan de reportage suggereerde.

"Fotografen die de Erasmusbrug in Rotterdam in hun zoeker vangen, hoeven niet meer eerst hun geld te tellen voor ze afdrukken", schrijft Trouw. Sinds 1 september verbiedt de Auteurswet het niet meer om voor eigen gewin foto's van gebouwen te maken. Toen nam Nederland een EU-richtlijn over. Gebouwen en beeldhouwwerken die permanent buiten staan, mag je fotograferen 'zoals ze zich daar bevinden'. Tot dan toe mocht het alleen in bepaalde gevallen, bijvoorbeeld als het gefotografeerde niet het hoofdonderwerp was.
